Top Musos enter MTN 8 Last Muso Standing Competition

MTN South Africa unveiled the MTN8 Last Muso Standing, a competition that allows 8 Local Musicians to compete for the Ultimate bragging right.
On Wednesday 10 July, the gauntlet was thrown and worthy Musos have heeded the call to create the song that will have music fans dancing during this year’s MTN8 Wafa Wafa football tournament.

With all top-eight entries in, the final decision is now in the hands of the fans to vote for the song that they feel deserves the title of being the official song of Africa’s richest soccer spectacle.

The quest to find the official song began when an official invite was sent to record companies to submit unique songs that would capture the spirit of the MTN8 tournament. The selection criteria ranged from a soccer theme, cultural identity, artistic execution, and melody and entertainment value.

Mapula Bodibe GM Consumer Segment at MTN SA said: “MTN is committed to creating platforms that connect fans of music and football alike to their passions. This exciting music component and the first of its kind in a football tournament in South Africa, provides fans with an opportunity to select a song that resonates with the MTN8 tournament”

Judging took place over a two-day period, with the adjudication panel sounding optimistic that fans will identify a song out of the Top8 that best describes the tournament. The judges were made-up of various renowned experts in entertainment such as such as SAMA’s CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi, House and Radio DJ Glen Lewis, record label owner and music producer Petro Stathoussis, YOLO board member Siyabonga “Slikour” Metane, Lynette Davis of LLJ Productions and music and PR specialist Lerato Sengadi.

The Top8 artists, made up of kwaito, dance, hip-hop, jazz artists and a house DJ, have each been allocated a unique number, where fans can cast their votes for their favourite song.  Voting lines open on Wednesday 10th July and close at midnight on Friday, 26th July 2013. The winning Last Muso Standing artists will be announced at the launch of the MTN8 competition at the end of July and walk away with a R 250 000.00 cash prize including iPad mini‘s courtesy of MTN.

The competition sees the return of the revered Mahotella Queens, who have teamed up with kwaito star Brickz and Zamo in the remake of Kazet.

Oskido, Professor, Busiswa and Zulu have teamed up to create their MTN8 song titled Wafa Wafa; New kids on block Soweto’s Finest featuring DJ Mshega, RazoKutt, Cruz and SK are some of the surprise packages that blew away the judging panel, thanks to their passion and talent in the delivery of their proposed MTN8 songs.

Shugasmakx and Kwesta add a bit of hip-hop rhyming in their usual creative lyrical way in their making of a football song that resonates with MTN8. DJ Clock of uMahamba Yedwa fame has remixed the track and spiced it up with vocals on football. Music legend Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse submitted his renowned Shikisha song with the hope of shaking up the crowds on the stands come MTN8.
